Empathy and society!!!

Hey there, my darlings. Hope you’ve all been great. The last two months have been hectic and I have absolutely had no time to even touch my laptop. I will go more into this in posts to come.

Although I’ve been crazy busy, I would say it’s a good busy. It’s the kind of busy that I am actually getting work done and being present with MY PEOPLE.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s get into today’s topic. This is something that has been weighing in my mind lately. I spend a lot of time on social media, doomscrolling- don’t worry, I am working on getting rid of this habit!

The more time I spend on social media, the more I realise that as a society, we are very critical of others

We are so quick to judge people and quick to assume the worst of people.

We are quick to brand people bad parents, bad friends, bad partners or simply someone that deserves whatever they are going through.

I can’t help but wonder: Where is our empathy?

The Cambridge Dictionary defines empathy as the ability to share someone else’s feelings or experiences by imagining what it would be like to be in that person’s situation.

We can all use a little empathy. Actually, we can all use a lot of empathy.

Does that even make sense? I don’t know but what I do know is that we need to start giving people grace.

We’re so used to watching people’s lives from the outside that we forget that there is a whole human being behind the screen.

We do this to our friends and family in real life too. We are ready to toss people to the side or box them in some demeaning area of life simply because we they decide not to live the same life as us!

Why are we like this?

What got us to this point?

Have humans always been this quick to disregard the feelings and experiences of others, or has social media simply amplified it?

Maybe. Maybe not.

We need to realise that people have history.

People are carrying things that can’t see, including you.

Especially in this economy. Lord!!!

So why have are we, as a society are we losing this important personality trait?

Empathy is actually a fundamental element of social and emotional intelligence and I am sorry but you can’t consider yourself a decent human being if you don’t have the ability to connecting with someone through their feelings.

It is about listening and reading between the line to understand others’ perspectives/point of view.

Now, I am in no way, shape or form advocating for bad or abusive behaviour at all. Some things/actions absolutely deserved to be called out.

Actions have consequences, and there are situations where protecting yourself and setting boundaries is absolutely necessary.

But sometimes I do think we blur the line between holding someone accountable and completely stripping them of their humanity.

This article (The power of empathy) from the Australian Psychological Society does a great job at explaining empathy. Although it is catered to people in the Psychology field, I think everyone could definitely benefit from reading it.

Anyway, this is getting too long so I am going to cut it there. Before I go, I just want you to remember that everyone has a story so please try to extend some grace!

Anyway guy, thanks again for checking in with me.
